Spirituality

Literature and Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, a pioneer in the field of holistic wellness, reminds us that the word Health is from the Anglican word hal, meaning holy or whole. This gives evidence to the already known wholeness we feel when our health is at its best. A wellness paradigm can best be explained as an approach to illustrate an accurate definition of holistic wellness; the integration, balance and harmony that includes the mind, body, spirit and emotional well-being of the individual. With each of the components coming together as one, none other than Dr. Kubler-Ross, designs the Mandala of Wellness Paradigm, with the whole being greater than the sum. Spirituality is in fact a great but difficult contribution, due to its purpose being exclusive to one’s beliefs and does not necessarily have to be religion. When spiritual well-being is mature there is a conscious of something higher than oneself and is seen through the development of three factors: insightful relationships, personal values, and the want for a meaningful purpose. Without the development and strengthening of these factors the other three tenets of wellness are simply frail and providing some examples of how an underdeveloped spirituality can impact the emotional, physical and mental well-being of an individual include as follows.

Emotional: With a strong spirituality I have the ability to have insightful and nurturing relationships that prepares me for the emotional struggles within my emotional well-being. This strength gives me the ability to feel, express, control and not be controlled by my human emotions.

Physical: With a healthy spirituality, I have the ability to have a strong personal value system where I take responsibility for my actions and the health of my body. My personal values hold me to maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle that encourages my children to do the same.

Mental: With a sharp spirituality, I am able to have the fulfillment of a meaningful purpose in life through academic advancement as well as parenting children. I am able enjoy the finer things in life that are found within art, music and the unconscious mind of myself and my loved ones. My spirituality well-being can function in the different areas of my life because I can function in the different areas of mental well-being.
